Riba free commitment
Respected people, colleagues, acquaintances, friends and general masses of society. A great responsibility has fallen upon my shoulders. By God, this responsibility is too big for one man to bear. I wished that it would have devolved on some other person more worthy than me.
In the interest of public benefit, societal well-being and financial fairness, some of the responsibility for leading the charge against financial injustice, exploitation and inequality known as Riba, has fallen upon me, the board of trustees and my team at the Riba Free Foundation (RFF). I assure you that I will not shy away from my tasks, and I will make an earnest effort to discharge the onerous duties of my position as CEO, to the best of my capacity in accordance with the injunctions of Islam.

Riba is an Arabic term that translates to “excess” or “increase.” In Islamic finance and jurisprudence, it refers to the concept of usury or the charging of interest on loans. Riba is explicitly prohibited in Islam, as it is considered exploitative and unjust. The prohibition is based on principles outlined in the Quran and the Hadith (sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad).

What are the main types of Riba?

What are the main types of Riba?
Riba has various shapes, sizes and forms. The two main types that commonly exist and are most witnessed explained below.
There are two main types of Riba:
1. *Riba al-Nasi’ah (ربا النسيئة)*: This refers to the interest charged on loans. It occurs when a lender requires the borrower to pay back more than the principal amount, typically as a condition of the loan. For example, lending $100 and requiring $110 in return.
2. *Riba al-Fadl (ربا الفضل)*: This refers to an excess in the exchange of specific commodities (such as gold, silver, wheat, barley, dates, and salt) that are of the same kind. For example, trading unequal amounts of gold or selling low-quality wheat for high-quality wheat in unequal quantities.
The prohibition of Riba is rooted in the belief that money should not generate profit simply by being lent out. Instead, profit should be earned through legitimate trade, investment, or productive economic activity. Islamic finance offers alternative financial instruments, such as profit-sharing (Mudarabah), joint ventures (Musharakah), and leasing (Ijarah), to comply with these principles.
What's the issue with interest?

What's the issue with interest?
Over the past 100 years, interest has played a significant role in ensuring major parts of the global population are busy servicing debt by paying more money on top what they borrow. Fundamentally the interest-based model widens economic inequality. No country has ever implemented a fully- fledged interest free economic system and this approach would relieve millions of households from its heaviness. The RFF advocates and champions the use of riba-free and promotes business, products and services which offer riba-free value- based solutions.
